Dave Hartman’s Journey to Big Fish Tattoo
In the heart of Solana Beach, California, Big Fish Tattoo is more than just a tattoo studio—it’s a testament to hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of passion. At the helm is Dave Hartman, a former advertising professional turned successful tattoo artist and business owner. His journey from corporate America to owning one of the most respected tattoo studios in the area is both inspiring and informative for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs alike.
Discovering a Passion for Ink
Dave’s story begins in Connecticut, where he grew up before moving to New York for college. It was during his college years that he was introduced to the world of tattoos. Many of his friends started getting tattoos, and some even pursued careers as tattoo artists. Meanwhile, Dave embarked on a path in advertising, working in corporate America. But his visits to his friends’ tattoo shops in San Diego ignited a spark.
He began experimenting, tattooing his coworkers at the advertising agency. After living in New York for a few years, Dave decided to leave New York City and start fresh with a new career in a new city.
“I always felt like owning a business was something I was meant to do,” he reflects.
This realization, coupled with his growing passion for tattooing, set him on a new path.

Building Big Fish Tattoo
In 2009, during the challenges of a recession, Dave opened Big Fish Tattoo in Solana Beach. “It was a challenge,” he admits. Opening a business during a recession was difficult, but Dave was determined. The area lacked tattoo shops, giving Big Fish a unique opportunity to thrive despite the challenges that came with introducing a new type of business to the area.
Dave’s dedication paid off. Over the past 15 years, he’s honed his craft and built a loyal clientele. While his specialty lies in traditional Japanese-style tattoos, he doesn’t limit himself. From American traditional to black-and-gray designs, Dave sees every tattoo as an honor.
“I’m flattered when someone picks me to do their tattoo, especially now when there’s so many tattoo artists to choose from,” he shares.
The Importance of Tools and Technology
For Dave, success in the tattoo industry isn’t just about skill—it’s about the tools you use. “Investing in the right tools is crucial,” he emphasizes. He is a believer that people notice the details, from the lighting to the tattoo machines and even the sound system in your studio.
Lighting, in particular, plays a significant role in Dave’s profession. “I need a lot of light to see the details, how the skin is reacting, and the colors and pigments,” he explains. Lume Cube lights have been a game-changer for his studio. Their adjustable hues and intensity allow Dave to adapt to different environments, ensuring both efficiency and a superior client experience.
“People notice the details, you can feel and you can tell when you walk into an environment and they have quality machinery, lighting, sound system - all that kind of stuff elevates the vibe of the business," he says.

Lessons in Leadership and Advice for Aspiring Artists
Running a successful tattoo studio has taught Dave invaluable lessons. “It’s not about focusing on yourself but on the people in your business,” he advises. He leads by thinking about others and how he can create a positive environment for his team and clients.
For those considering a career in tattooing, Dave offers candid advice: “Be very sure this is what you want to do. Sometimes it looks easy, but there’s a lot that goes into owning a business. There are benefits, but you have to be willing to sacrifice to be successful.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Big Fish Tattoo stands as a symbol of Dave’s journey and dedication. With a focus on quality, creativity, and client experience, Dave continues to push the boundaries of his craft. Whether you’re an aspiring tattoo artist or a small business owner, his story serves as a reminder that with passion, the right tools, and a commitment to growth, success is possible.
