Fern Productions takes us along their journey to unveil their narrative behind capturing the perfect shot in the beauty and vastness of Patagonia. Watch now.

“In the mesmerizing world of landscape photography, the final polished image that meets the eye is often just the tip of the iceberg. Behind each shot lies a hidden narrative, an untold story of dedication and perseverance.” - Fern Productions

This story captures the inspiring journey of Fern Productions; Jenna Dixon and Pete O’Hara, as they trekked into the heart of Patagonia. Capturing the vastness of the natural landscape with human subjects and the innovative use of Lume Cube photography lights. Their trip is a testament to the relentless pursuit of perfection in the face of nature's unpredictability.

The Journey Begins

The trip was a rigorous test of dedication and perseverance. Jenna and Pete covered hundreds of kilometers and spent countless hours scouting for the perfect location, only to be humbled by nature's elements. The journey began in Chile, on the world-famous trek in Torres del Paine National Park, where the team spent five days experiencing the rugged beauty and striking variety of landscapes the region had to offer. From glacier ice fields and wildflower-filled meadows to the iconic granite towers, every scene was a visual feast.

Overcoming Patagonia's Relentless Weather

The extremes and volatility of Patagonia's weather presented significant challenges. The team experienced everything from 120 km/h winds, rain, snow, and heavy cloud coverage. These conditions tested their resolve and adaptability. Hearing from locals about the elusive appearance of peaks like Fitzroy and Cerro Torre added to the anticipation and excitement of capturing the perfect shot.

Innovative Lighting Solutions

Using the versatile and packable Tube Light Mini, the team creatively added interest to their scenes. They manually placed lights in the cracks of rock faces, creating cascading streams of light that enhanced the natural beauty of the landscape. This innovative use of lighting allowed them to capture stunning images even in low light situations.

Capturing Human Subjects in Nature

Lighting Techniques

  1. Golden Hour and Nighttime Brilliance: The team used Lume Cube lighting to enhance their subjects during the golden hour and nighttime scenes. The lights provided the perfect fill light, ensuring the subjects were well-lit while maintaining the natural ambiance.
  2. Dynamic Range in Harsh Conditions: Patagonia's weather can be harsh and unpredictable. The durability and adaptability of Lume Cube lighting allowed the team to maintain consistent lighting conditions, ensuring every shot was perfectly exposed despite the challenging environment.

The Final Shot

The culmination of their efforts was a breathtaking image showcasing a human subject amidst the stunning Patagonia landscape, backlit with Lume Cube lights. This final image captured the essence of their journey, combining the rugged and beautiful elements of nature with the creative use of photo lighting to tell a compelling story.
